______ Museum

Bruno Faria

One can say that at least since the creation of the Beaubourg in Paris in 1977, the proliferation of new museums and cultural centers in different cities is recognized as a strategy to improve the urban space, create or strengthen tourism or simply "ennoble" particular place (the so-called gentrification). What these new spaces share is a monumental postmodern architecture, usually designed by an architect of international prestige. This is the case of the São Paulo's Theatre of Dance and Opera that is being built in the old bus station in the district of Luz, with design by the duo of swiss architects Herzog & De Meuron, or the future Museum of Image and Sound in Rio de Janeiro, that is being built in Copacabana.

Thinking about such situations and the social, political and cultural context of where his work would be presented, in 2007, during the period of a scholarship that he won by the Art Museum of Pampulha in Belo Horizonte, Bruno Faria developed the work 'Anexo' . From a questioning about the expectations of the arrival of a new and more suitable building for the Pampulha Museum, the artist staged the opening of this new building with a cocktail which included the presence of guests. On the occasion, Faria asked the Director of the museum to make a speech and cut a ribbon, although what was presented was only a mockup.

For the exhibition "À sombra do futuro", the artist decided to proceed with the research on the implantation of new museums that he started in Belo Horizonte. Using an ironic game, he questions how the new institutions of art are designed and inserted in the cities, from its architectural design, its collection, its audience to its social and educational role.
